Born in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1969, Alec Soth is an American photographer known for his contemplative portraits and evocative depictions of everyday life across the United States. Blending documentary observation with a literary sensibility, his photographs explore solitude, longing and the complexities of the American experience. He studied photography at Sarah Lawrence College in New York, graduating in 1992, before establishing his practice in his hometown.
The artist gained international recognition in 2004 with Sleeping by the Mississippi, his first major photobook, which traces the Mississippi River through portraits, landscapes and intimate details of life along its banks. Initially self-published in a limited edition, the project attracted critical attention and was subsequently published by Steidl. That same year, he participated in the Whitney Biennial in New York, marking a significant breakthrough in his career.
His subsequent projects have expanded this exploration of people and place. In NIAGARA (2006), Soth examined the contrasting emotions surrounding Niagara Falls, from romance and optimism to despair. Broken Manual (2010) investigated the desire to withdraw from society, while Songbook (2015) documented moments of human connection in public spaces. Across these series, he combines carefully composed imagery with an understated, psychologically perceptive approach, creating photographs that occupy a space between documentary and fiction.
In 2008, he founded Little Brown Mushroom, an independent publishing venture dedicated to visual storytelling and artist books. He became a full member of Magnum Photos in the same year, further establishing his position in contemporary photography. His work has been the subject of major exhibitions at institutions including Jeu de Paume in Paris and the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis. In 2013, he received a Guggenheim Fellowship.
The artist’s photographs are held in prominent public collections, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art. His work has also achieved significant results at auction. In 2024, Charles, Vasa, Minnesota (2002) realised US$201,600 at Christie’s, setting an artist record at the sale. He continues to live and work in Minneapolis, where he develops long-term photographic projects and publishes books through Little Brown Mushroom.
