拍卖简介

Christie’s flagship 20th/21st Century series in London continues on 21 October with the Modern British and Irish Art Evening Sale, presenting outstanding works by the major artists who shaped British and Irish art in the 20th and 21st centuries.

Leading the sale is Dame Barbara Hepworth's defining masterwork Sculpture with Colour (Eos) (1946). Created at a pivotal moment in her career, it is a landmark example of her pioneering approach to carving, colour and space, and was recently included in the major exhibition Hepworth in Colour at the Courtauld Gallery, London, earlier this year. Around it, the sale honours the breadth of her practice in every medium: the monumental Figure (Sunion), carved from a single piece of elm in 1960; Sea Form (Porthmeor) (1958), the only cast of this iconic bronze to remain in private hands; the lyrical Orpheus (Maquette 1) in brass and strings; and the beautiful alabaster carving Godrevy (1959).

Henry Moore, a leading figure in modern British sculpture, is represented by his Family Group (1947), among the most intimate and cherished themes of his career, together with two significant wartime drawings.

Important British art from the post-war period is led by Frank Bowling’s seminal Degaulle G.E.P., which represents the first time a work from his most sought-after ‘Map Painting’ series has come to auction. British Pop is celebrated with major works by Eduardo Paolozzi, Patrick Caulfield and Peter Blake. The sale features Post-war British sculpture by Lynn Chadwick, Barry Flanagan and Emily Young; and paintings by important School of London artists, Frank Auerbach and Euan Uglow.

Among the early twentieth-century highlights are two paintings from the Collection of the Hon. Patrick and Lady Amabel Lindsay: The Way Down to the Sea, a masterpiece by Augustus John, and The Horses of St Mark’s, Venice by Walter Richard Sickert. Also offered are paintings by Sir William Nicholson and Gwen John, and a rare, important floral still-life by Gluck.

Sir Winston Churchill’s Amaryllis Lily is sold to benefit the Churchill Fellowship, the UK charity honouring Sir Winston Churchill’s legacy.

The St Ives school is represented through Ben Nicholson, Peter Lanyon and Patrick Heron, whose work reflects the modernist spirit of Cornwall in the mid-twentieth century.
